At our core, we pride ourselves on coaching some of the country’s top cyclists and triathletes through both sides of our business; Ride Revolution and Tri Revolution.
Head Tri Coach Kieran Lindars initially came to us in 2021 as a client with a clear objective: to enhance his cycling performance within the context of triathlon. Kieran recognised that the cycling aspect of his triathlon training needed a specialised focus, especially as he transitioned to long-course events like full Ironman and 70.3 distances. At the time, Kieran’s cycling was his weak point, limiting his overall performance.
We identified that Kieran was approximately 30 watts behind the world’s best. But in a constantly evolving sport, this was a rapidly moving target. We needed to close the initial gap, plus account for further improvements each year—no small task.
Our initial goal was simple: get Kieran to a level where he could keep pace with the strongest riders, setting him up to leverage his strength as a runner. We decided to prioritise cycling in his training, dedicating a substantial portion of his weekly regimen to it. At that time, Kieran was ranked around 250th globally, funding his dreams out of pocket and fully committed to reaching the top.
Throughout 2021, we focused on integrating Kieran into regular training with elite-level cyclists, not just to boost his numbers but to transform him into a true cyclist—better technically, more aerodynamic, and more comfortable at high speeds. Despite significant improvements, bad luck at his key race, the 2021 Challenge Almere, meant we’d have to wait until 2022 to showcase his progress.
In 2022, our focus remained on closing the 30-watt gap, but as the triathlon world progressed, Kieran’s aging equipment became a disadvantage. We collaborated with our bike fit partner, Velomotion, to make significant adjustments within the limitations of his existing setup.
The start of the 2022 season was challenging, with a 12th place at Challenge Salou and a DNF at Challenge Gran Canaria. However, we remained confident in our approach, culminating in a breakthrough at the late-season Challenge Almere (European Champs), where Kieran delivered a career-defining performance—winning with a strong bike leg followed by a 2:42 marathon.
Despite this victory, Kieran’s profile didn’t gain the traction it deserved, and 2023 was shaping up to be another year of hard work without much external support. Equipment and nutrition gaps re-emerged as significant challenges. Although Kieran had closed the physical wattage gap, equipment limitations and struggles with new nutritional strategies left us feeling behind. Nevertheless, Kieran persevered.
The 2023 season started positively with several top 10 finishes, all leading up to the defence of his Challenge Almere title. Ironically, it was an unexpected moment – Kieran struggling to finish due to hyperthermia (over heating) – and the subsequent viral social media footage that brought him much-needed attention he deserved, resulting in new sponsorships opportunities and subsequently allowing us to close the equipment gap to his competitors.
It was around this time that Kieran’s involvement with us became more than just a coach to client relationship. Kieran had already been doing some Tri coaching for us for a number of years, alongside managing his own clients externally. Over the winter, we took us of his down time to formally launch Tri Revolution as a separate entity to allow us to improve and drive forward out Tri and multisport coaching options. Kieran would take on the roll of head Tri coach.
With this, we brought the management of Kieran’s overall training, equipment and nutrition all in house. No longer were we just working on the bike side of Kieran’s training. We now controlled and oversaw the management of each individual element of his training. We were optimistic this would provide the added impetus for that final step up to the upper echelons of the sport.
However, the aftermath of hyperthermia affected Kieran’s recovery, requiring a careful and gradual return to training. It was a slow process, but with persistence, we saw breakthroughs in training, including a quick 20-watt increase in his LT1 power and new personal bests in threshold sessions.
Kieran approached the Ironman European Championships in Frankfurt, the biggest race of his career, in his best-ever form. Despite a challenging weather forecast, Kieran remained confident. He executed a strong swim, followed by a 4:03 bike leg, coming in with the lead pack. Despite technology issues on the run due to the poor weather, he pushed through, ultimately finishing in an astonishing British record 7:32:14 to claim silver.
This result marks the culmination of three years of relentless effort and a well-deserved triumph on the world stage. We’re proud to have Kieran not only as a client but also as a colleague at Tri Revolution.
