Jason Newbery Triathlon Coach
Jason didn’t discover his passion for endurance sports until the age of 25, having spent his younger years immersed in competitive team sports. His first attempt at a marathon was a humbling experience, crossing the finish line in 5:27. But that race sparked something in him, and with perseverance, he progressed to a personal best of 2:48. This transformative journey solidified his love for long-distance running and set the foundation for his future in triathlon.
After the birth of his son, Jason left his role as a PE teacher to pursue a Master’s degree in Applied Exercise Physiology. His studies were focused on triathlon performance, with his dissertation titled, “The Utilisation of Running Cadence Manipulation for the Attenuation of the Negative Effects of Cycling on Running Performance in Triathlon.” This period of study not only deepened his understanding of endurance sports but also fuelled his desire to help others achieve their goals.
Upon completing his Master’s degree, Jason spent a year interning and then delivering consultancy services for a university’s sports science unit. During this time, he served as the lead physiologist for the Marathon des Sables Heat Acclimation service, and worked with English Institute of Sport physiologists and University of Brighton lecturers on Team GB’s Tokyo 2020 “Heat Resource Pack”, advising athletes on performance preparation for the heat. These experiences gave him invaluable insight into the physiological demands of elite performance and the practical strategies needed to excel.
Jason’s transition from running to triathlon in 2017 provided a new rewarding challenge. Over the years, he has earned podium finishes in age-group racing, achieving a personal best of 4:30 for the middle-distance (70.3) and 9:26 for the full-distance (Ironman).
Since 2018, Jason has been coaching professionally, completing his British Triathlon Level 2 Personal Coach award and working with athletes ranging from beginners to seasoned competitors in both running (from 5k to ultramarathons) and triathlon (from sprint to Ironman distances). His coaching philosophy revolves around tailoring training to the unique demands of an athlete’s target event while respecting the realities of their lifestyle. Whether it’s refining race-day strategy, optimising nutrition, or balancing training with a busy schedule, he is dedicated to helping his athletes achieve their potential.
Known for his patient and approachable manner, he thrives on building confidence in his athletes and helping them unlock new levels of performance. His own journey from novice to competitive athlete gives him a deep understanding of the challenges and triumphs his athletes face.
