Jason Newbery Head Triathlon Coach

Jason didn’t discover endurance sport until 25, after years in competitive team sports. His first marathon was a humbling 5:27 finish, but it sparked something that would define his career. Through perseverance, he eventually lowered his marathon time to 2:48, a transformation that cemented his love for long-distance running and laid the foundation for triathlon.

The birth of his son prompted a pivotal shift. Jason left his PE teaching role to pursue a Master’s degree in Applied Exercise Physiology, focusing his research on triathlon performance. His dissertation explored “The Utilisation of Running Cadence Manipulation for the Attenuation of the Negative Effects of Cycling on Running Performance in Triathlon.”

Following his Master’s, Jason spent a year interning and later consulting for a university sports science unit. He served as lead physiologist for the Marathon des Sables Heat Acclimation service and collaborated with English Institute of Sport physiologists and University of Brighton academics on Team GB’s Tokyo 2020 “Heat Resource Pack,” advising elite athletes on performance preparation. These experiences gave him rare insight into the physiological demands of world-class competition.

Jason transitioned to triathlon in 2017, achieving age-group podium finishes and personal bests of 4:30 (70.3) and 9:26 (Ironman).

Since 2018, he has coached professionally, holding a British Triathlon Level 2 Personal Coach award and a UK Athletics Run Coach award. He works with athletes across the spectrum, from beginners to seasoned competitors, 5km to ultramarathon, sprint to Ironman, always tailoring training to the event’s demands and the athlete’s real-world constraints.

Now, as Tri Revolution’s Head Coach, Jason brings his full breadth of experience to leading our coaching team. Known for his patient, approachable manner, he excels at building athlete confidence and unlocking performance. His own journey from novice to competitive age-grouper gives him an intuitive understanding of the challenges and triumphs his athletes face.
